In the summer of 2019, many new artists emerged. Many simply produced one hit, while few stuck around. One artist that remained in listener’s ears goes by Lizzo.
At only 31 years old, Lizzo owns a #1 Billboard single. Her single “Truth Hurts” continues to remain at the top of the charts. With a four-week run at #1, “Truth Hurts” tied with Iggy Azaela’s “Fancy” for longest running number-one song by a female rapper.
Born as Melissa Vivianne Jefferson, she grew up in Detroit, Michigan. When her family moved to Houston, she began rapping and even started her own music group as a fourteen year old. In this group, her stage name blossomed, inspired by the title of a Jay-Z song.
Breaking into the music industry proved difficult for Lizzo. At age 21, she even lived out of her car, still following her dream. From 2011 to 2015, Lizzo bounced around from band to band. She even released two albums: Lizzobangers and Big Grrrl Small World. Each achieved minimal success.
Her third album Coconut Oil, released on October 7, 2016, garnered positive reviews from critics and put her on the charts. Further, “Truth Hurts”, a song from her 2016 album, became featured in a Netflix movie after going viral on Tik Tok.
A main component of Lizzo’s star power appears to be her focus on body positivity. At every show, audiences may view her group of plus-size backup dancers, living their dream. This aspect led to her getting featured at many events and even being profiled in the June 2018 Teen Vogue issue.
There is no doubt that Lizzo’s fame continues to rise. With every new album and song, she gains more fans. Her story proves that no matter where someone comes from, they contain the potential to reach the stars.
